Este, a pedido do nosso amigo Carlinhos, era para ser um post sobre o falecimento de Joe Sampler, ocorrido no último dia 12/09, mas optamos por fazer o obituário dos próprios Crusaders, já que há alguns meses atrás faleceu também Wayne Henderson.

O The Crusaders era um grupo muito popular no início dos anos setenta por misturar jazz, pop e soul. Criado nos anos sessenta como The Jazz Crusaders, em 1971 passou a se chamar apenas  The Crusaders. Inicialmente era formado por Joe Sample (piano), Stix Hooper (baterias), Wilton Felder (saxofone), and Wayne Henderson (trombone). Por esta época eles introduziram um guitarrista : Larry Carlton e um baixista : Robert Pops Popwell. Com estas mudanças veio o sucesso comercial – como a sua parceria com Randy Crawford : Street Life, que fez bastante sucesso comercial. O sucesso perdurou ao longo dos anos oitenta, mas logo o grupo começou a se desmanchar – Henderson saiu em 1975 e Hooper em 1983. A saída destes membros fundadores não impediu que, com Sampler e Felder, mantivessem o conjunto, e ainda alcançassem mais um grande sucesso: Healing the Wounds. O álbum chegou ao  No. 1 na parada de Top Contemporary Jazz e ao No. 174  no Top 200 da Billboard.  A partir dai Sample deu prioridade a sua carreira solo. Em 2003 os membros fundadores: Sample, Felder e Hooper lançaram : Rural Renewal, tendo como convidados especiais Ray Parker Jr.  e  Eric Clapton. Houve mais uma reunião de Henderson, Felder e Sample para uma turnê em 2010. Neste ano de 2014 perdemos dois dos fundadores dos Crusaders: Henderson faleceu no dia 05/04 e Joe Sample no último dia 12/09.

Joe Sample merece um parágrafo especial. Nos anos 1980s, ele partiu para uma carreira solo de sucessol , além de gravar com inúmeros outros artistas: Miles Davis, George Benson, Jimmy Witherspoon, B. B. King, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, e The Supremes. Sample fazia juz ao seu nome, um verdadeiro sampler man , exibindo uma deliciosa mistura de  jazz, gospel, blues,música latina e clássica.
